What does the sentence in bold mean?
 
He's commenting on the enthusiasm or energy of the audience. It could also be referring to the size of the crowd, but judging by how he subsequently refers to them as "the best people", it's probably more about their enthusiasm.

It's a slight variation on 'quite some'.
