Being a child is all about having fun, but learning the reality of the world requires maturity. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee clearly develops the theme of growing up through her principal character Scout. Scout continues to learn more within the society around her, she starts to recognize the battle between blacks and whites. Although Scout begins to see changes in her society, those who affect her growing up the most include, Atticus, the community, and her brother Jem.
Scout grows and matures throughout the novel when influenced by her father Atticus Finch’s important lessons. Atticus Finch is a well respected lawyer in the Maycomb community, and is a widowed father to two children, Scout and Jem. Atticus is one of few people who are devoted to racial equality, he has ingrained a strong awareness of justice and equality in his children. As a way to show Atticus’s strong passion about equality he mentions to Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39) Scout seems to be upset after a day at school, she doesn’t understand why Miss Caroline is so against her learning outside of the classroom. Scout takes into consideration that she doesn’t truly know Miss Caroline, and really doesn’t know her point of view. This is the first lesson Atticus is giving Scout, knowing that people may disagree with you or may have a different perspective on things is a huge maturing point. If a person can understand that others may have unfamiliar opinions, getting along with others becomes a whole lot easier.
