I forgot to do it. - I forgot that I had/needed to to it. I didn't do it.
I forgot doing it. - I forgot that I had done it.

Where I live, the second sentence, "I forgot doing it" sounds like an incomplete sentence, and would probably be considered meaningless on its own.
