Hello.

I want to suggest a feeling/tendency/inclination/fear/love/hatred exists deep withing a person. What verb can I use?

I found "rail" but I'm not sure if it's common and applies to various feelings.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/roil

Could you please tell me what you think about these sentences? What other verbs can I use?

1. A desire to hurt him roiled deep within her.

2. Unhealthy desires to hurt others roil deep within him.

3. Some masochistic tendencies roiled deep within her.

4. Paranoia roils deep withing the people of the country.

5. A sense of mistrust roils deep within him.

6. Insecurity and self-doubt have been roiling inside him.

7. Sadistic inclinations roil deep within him.

8. Jealousy and bitterness roil in him.

9. A profound sense of simultaneous love and hate for her roiled in him.

10. Anger and resentment roil deep inside him.

Note my corrections above.

You said you found "rail" and then gave us a list of example sentences for "roil". Please take more care.

You are right.

Are those ten sentences correct and natural?

What other verbs can I use in those sentences?

You can say a person has feelings. Of course, that doesn't have the sense of them being all stirred up.

Your sentences are natural enough. (If I had thought otherwise I would have said so.)

Sometimes I see something and don't say anything. That's because (1) I'm lazy, and (2) emsr2d2 always catches everything I miss (or ignore).

Can I also use the verb "simmer" in those 10 sentences?

Can you please give us fewer sentences to consider if you're then going to ask if you can change the verb? We've already had to read and consider all ten sentences once in order to answer the original question. Now we have to read all of them again, replacing "roil" with "simmer" and decide if we think they work. I think three or four sentences is enough.

Okay.

1. A desire to hurt him simmered deep within her.

2.
Sadistic inclinations simmer deep within him.

3. Paranoia simmered deep withing the people of the country.

4. Insecurity and self-doubt have been simmering inside him.

Can I also use "seethe"? Would the meaning be different?

1. A desire to hurt him seethed deep within her.

2. Sadistic inclinations seethe deep within him.

3. Paranoia seethed deep withing the people of the country.

4. Insecurity and self-doubt have been seething inside him.

Yes, those are OK.

The word seethe suggests to me an especially strong feeling. Examples:

When I saw him he was seething with rage.

He seethed with indignation over the outrage.

They all look fine to me. Roil is a great word, isn't it? More verbs:

- well
- battle
- stir
- fulminate
- surge
- duel
- boil
- seethe
- jostle
- whirl
- simmer
- bubble
- churn
