Hello.

Sometimes, a person looks at another person in a humiliating way. Their eyes moved up and down the other person and they mean to degrade that person with that look.

How can I describe that?

Emily entered the bar, disheveled and smelly. Laura looked at her....[her eyes moved up and down Emily's figure in a humiliating way]

Perhaps you could say she looked at her disdainfully.

Perhaps you could say she looked at her disdainfully.

Two things:
1. I don't want to use an adverb.
2. I want to suggest the eyes looked up and down the subject.

"She gave her a withering look" comes to mind, but that doesn't fulfill all of your requirements.

You have to be literal in this case.

"She looked him up and down witheringly/disdainfully."

Good suggestions above. To complete that sentence, an adverb is almost inevitable.

Other ideas: Laura looked at her:

- contemptfully
- with contempt
- dismissively
- disgustedly
- with disgust
- haughtily
