Grammar, Structure and Style (2001 edition)

This book is brilliant for any 'A' Level student - it clearly illustrates the important language factors with helpful examples. This was like a Bible through my 'A' Levels!! The theory of the English Language is explained in such a way that it is a big help when the exams come round.

The key topics for the exams are covered, including: the origins of English, child language acquisition, semantics, media language, historical change and spoken English.

But seriously, any student studying 'A' Level English should use this book as a fantastic guide to understand the important (and exam based) points of the many aspects of the English Language.

Good content but a little dull

i am using this book to help me while studing AS english language. For this perpose, the book is very helpful. It covers all the areas i am studing this year as well as good coverage of the A2 course. The book is broken down into three sections; A- The structers of english. This looks at a number of areas including language and speech and language and grammar. Section B looks at language and Social Context focusing on language in society and the development of language. Section C is about analysing and evaluating prose. This part of the book gives guidelines on review techniques and explains diferent kinds of directed writing. The book is laid out to be an excelent compainion to the course. It explains each section step by step then illustraits with exercises and examples. Although a bit dull, as it is in black, white and grey, the chapters are set out clearly as are all examples. On the whole i would suggest this book as a companion to your AS or A level course, even if your teacher hasn't as it will clearify any ideas raised in lectures.
