Amazing...

I read "Das Parfum" about 8 years ago for the first time and although I've read many other great books since then, it is still my absolute favourite.
One reason is of course that it is simply a good story: Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is a man, who is an outcast - since the day he was born, when he literally freaked out the accoucheuse who was supposed to suckle him. He'd be the devil himself she said, greedy and most significantly, lacking the typical "baby-scent". It seems strangely senseful that he then develops such an exquisite sense of smell that leads him to become a gifted perfumier. No. More than gifted: he becomes the greatest perfumier of all times and surpasses his teacher in Paris. His desire for scents go beyond that of a amn in his profession though and the reader is at the same time disgusted as he is fascinated as he follows him and watches what happens...
An even bigger reason though, why this book is so mind-blowing good, is the way that Sueskind writes. The easiest way to describe it is simply to say: we are there! We don't only hear about what Grenouille hears, sees (and most importantly) smells, we hear, see and smell it ourselves. We feel strangely close to a man that can only be described as one of the sickest and cruel people ever to have lived and feel sick and delighted at the same time.
If you only read one book in your life: read this!
