A Monster of a Tale

When I first saw this novel in the bookstore, I was instantly drawn in by the title and the images on the cover. Sure, that's not the best thing to notice about any book, but it was what caught my attention, and I'm sure that was what Myers had intended. In any case, I looked it over, read the back, and decided I wasn't interested in it, and so back on the shelf it went.

However it popped up once again while I was taking my current Virtual Highschool class, which required us to read it. So, I did. The first thing I noticed was the way it was written, or more really, the point of view from which it was written. I did not like it in the least. The whole 'script' method doesn't work well for me. I enjoy seeing into characters' minds, but Monster simply skims the surface of them. The only character we really get a feeling for is Steve Harmon, and those parts are inconsistent and brief.

It's not to say that I didn't enjoy the book! It kept my attention throughout the entire thing with a good plot, interesting characters and the perfect pace. I was pleased with the ending and how Myers concluded it all. So really my only problem with it is the script writing style; besides that it was a wonderful book that I recommend to anyone.

Monster was a fantastic novel! Steve Harmon, black man, sent to jail, and on trial for a murder he didn't even commit! You never knew what was going to happen next. The way Meyers wrote this he made the characters seem extremely lifelike, not stereotypes. They all had real emotions, whether it was Steve who was fine expressing himself or King who was basically emotionless. In this book Steve is on trial for murder against a drugstore owner. The way Meyers has written this book was in a movie script format in third person. Being written this way allows a reader to see things almost as an onlooker in the courtroom or even a juror. You aren't influenced to put labels on the characters and are free to think whatever you want about them. It's up to the reader to decide whether or not Steve Harmon is a "MONSTER" or was it just a cover up for somebody else. The scenario of this story is very much believable. It gives you all the details of the courtroom and what everybody is saying! All in all I believe that this book was extremely well written and would recommend it to anyone.

I thought that this book was a good book. It had you reading til the end to unfold the story. it gives you a feeling what life would be like if you were in court at a young age.

My school review for Monster

I found the book Monster to be very interesting. It really showed how lonely of a life a prisoner has. After reading this book I will NEVER go to jail. It was cool to see the different people that came in and out of Steve's life because it really gave a taste to what Steve's neighborhood was like. It went very into detail with the case which I liked; I could imagine every scene every time. My favorite scene was when the jury pronounced the verdict. I would suggest this book to everyone I know. I am very glad I read this book.

This book was in great condition, it still looks fairly new although I only paid a fraction of the cost for it. Also, once I paid it was shipped quickly and efficiently.
