given the other ALL 5 star reviews..I ordered this book. I have many spanish cd's and books. I'd say I am no beginner, possibly intermediate??? This book is for beginners. Maybe not people who can't count to 10, but a beginner none-the-less. Spend your money on pimsleur and you'll be happier (or better yet borrow pimsleur from the library)...I'd say a 3 star rating from me was generous.

A Helpful Read

This book was recommended to me by my tutor. As the book suggests, you definitely need to know some basic Spanish before you buy it but if you are a bit rusty and you want to "Tune up your Spanish" as the title says - then this is your book. It has some great phrases to learn and wonderful text that is easy, captivating and instructive. This book is NOT boring and is a great tool to have in your bookcase.

This is #1 of the top 10 Spanish instruction books that I have read to date. It delivers all that it promises and more. The 60-minute audio CD is as excellent as the book. I have numerous Spanish instruction books, videos, magazines and CD programs, and this really ties it all together. A+

Fabulous Book

This book was introduced to me while I was in Mexico to increase my fluency, and after reading it, I determined to buy it when I returned.

The book begins where classroom Spanish ends. It tells you what folks are really saying and different ways they say it and adds to your repertoire of phrases and expressions that can make your conversation more humorous and enjoyable for yourself and those to whom you are speaking.

It is divided into 10 sections which cover most of the experiences you may or may not want to have in a Spanish-speaking culture, including shopping, travel, active listening, love and romance, and my favorite - Understanding how language, culture, and humor interact. The book is filled with idiomatic expressions and sayings which Spanish-speakers use often and love to hear. It tells you the degree of strength/crudness of different expressions and the words that are innocuous in one culture and vulgar in another to prevent major embarassment.

I haven't listened yet to the accompanying CD but plan to enjoy it as much as I enjoy the book. For anyone who wants to enrich their use of expressions and speak more of the vernacular, this is the book to get. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do more than read write and listen to Spanish.
