EDITORIAL REVIEW

The author team (Ivancevich/Konopaske/Matteson) has examined, listened, and responded to reviewers’, instructors’, and students’ suggestions on how to continue to make Organizational Behavior and Management, 8e a more user-friendly and application rich introductory OB textbook.

To accomplish this, OBM 8e achieves the difficult goal of preserving its key strengths (i.e., thorough, current, good balance of research and practice) while streamlining its content by removing over 100 pages of readings that are now available on the Web. This reduction in page length makes the book more affordable, teachable, and efficient for students.

"Preserving scholarship while streamlining" captures the spirit of what I/K/M used as the guiding principle while writing OBM 8e.

Tome of generalization and speculation

This book, like most organizational behavior books, is a great overview of the field of OB. Given that, this book could be chopped down to about a tenth of its current length and manage to cover everything efficiently. This is the main weakness of this book. The authors have made a diligent effort to include every single facet of OB from its history to every single disproved theory under the sun. My feeling about this is, if it's not valid, why talk about it? Why take up the space? For instance, Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs" - why talk about it? The only thing it has to offer is that it's a cute way to categorize people's needs. Unfortunately this theory, like over half of the theories discussed in this book, has been disproved, and so is essentially nothing more than organizational quackery and doesn't offer anything of value to the field. It seems like there is no end to the tedious lists of possible benefits of the myriad theories offered up as organizational science in this text. Essentially, what you get in one form or another as a result of implementing any of the techniques in the book amount to:

Increased organizational commitment
Increased job satisfaction
Increased perceptions of justice
Increased performance/productivity
Decreased turnover
Decreased resentment
Decreased counterproductive work behaviors

And so on, and so on...you get the picture. Close to 600 pages of possible causes of deviant and positive work behaviors, generally all followed by the caveat "there has been little empirical support for this theory..."

One reviewer said that this book could help you improve your management skills. Well, I can too, in about 1 sentence:

Treat your workers with respect (don't be a tyrant), give them feedback regularly, listen to them, and make sure they have the resources they need to do their jobs effectively. There. You're now a better manager.

Great Service!

The book, Organizational Behavior and Management, is an excellent rescource for anyone wishing to improve their management skills. This resource gives insight to better understand and improve management skills for the purpose of benefiting a company and most importantly, those being supervised.
