EDITORIAL REVIEW

This second volume of short stories contains more diverse and lively writing from the Spanish-speaking world. Again much of it is from Latin America, Carlos Fuentes being Mexican, Norberto Fuentes Cuban, and the other writers having their roots in Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Colombia and the Argentine. Only Ana Maria Matute is a native of Spain. This highly entertaining selection of stories, together with a chapter from Mario Vargas Llosa's novel "Conversation in the Cathedral", explores stylistic contrasts and gives an insight into the cultural and social milieu of the Spanish-speaking world. With notes on unusual Spanish words and phrases, it will be of great value to English students of the language as well as a helpful companion to Spanish-speaking students of English.

Review of Penguin Parallel Text, Volume 2
~ Written on Sep 5, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

This collection of dual language is well-designed for the learning reader. The translations are always moving at an even pace down the page, and the English is very close to the Spanish in meaning.

Some of the stories feel thick or incomplete, as though they were chosen from some larger Spanish work. They vary in content: some are mostly dialogue, others dense, roaming descriptions. Needless to say, not all of them held my attention.

Very useful for practicing and building vocabulary

This is an entertaining way to build vocabulary at an advanced intermediary level. The stories are fun to read, short enough to make a comfortable "homework" exercise and are deceptively easy to read. The side-by-side English translation turns out to be very useful, both in clarifying idioms and subtleties that are not immediately obvious ... and also in translating occasional unfamiliar words and slang.

Very helpful.
