quick & easy???????
~ Written on May 1, 2009. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

Lots of good recipes as advertised. BUT, quick and easy....hardly. Most of the recipes call for ingredients not in my larder and require more prep time than the every day person will invest. Good I guess if you are an accomplished chef.

Fine Dining for Diabetics and Everybody Else, too
~ Written on Feb 27, 2009. 4 out of 4 users found this review helpful.

I have quite a few cookbooks for diabetics, not because Hubby Dub or I are diabetics, but because good food is good food. If the recipes measure up, then I want the cookbooks in my ever expanding library.

From the The New Family Cookbook for people with Diabetes I've found plenty of mouthwatering recipes, particularly the Italian Turkey Sausage with Peppers and Onions on page 270 and the Onion Cheese Bread on page 51 and the smell that wafts throughout your house when you're cooking is just heavenly.

From the Diabetic Gourmet Cookbook I've done the Roast Chicken with Black Raspberry Sauce on page 103 and both Dub and I loved it. Sometimes it's hard to get him to eat healthy. It helps when the meal is delicious.

From the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Cookbook I've done the Peppered Beef Fillet with Mashed Potato, Peas & Horseradish and Dub loved it and okay, it's beef, sometimes if you want to keep your man, you've gotta give him red meat. This meal was delicious. Also from this book I've done the Pork & Cilantro Meatballs with Tomato Sauce (I added spaghetti) and we loved it. This cookbook is terrific, Diabetes or not.

From the Diabetes Low-Fat and No-Fat Meal in Minutes I've actually cooked quite a few meals. I've had the book a long time and know many of them by heart. Of course, I make changes here and there, but what cook doesn't after she's familiar with a recipe. This book is great for cooking up something fast. Good and easy recipes are what you'll find here. One recipe I really like is the Sauerkraut Confetti Salad on page 184. Dub hates it, but I do it at least once a month anyway. He just pushes it around on his plate, till I give him a glare, then he takes a bite or two. Sauerkraut is good for you and you don't have to always at ham, fatty sausage, and franks to it.

Lastly, for this posting, I'd like to talk about three of the meals I've prepared from The Joslin Diabetes Quick and Easy Cookbook. The Bow Ties with Asparagus, Cherry Tomatoes and Mushrooms on page 86 is very good and it's a very good way to use bow tie pasta. I'm a sucker for anything with tomatoes in it, so I was predisposed to like this, but it exceeded my expectations. For Sunday brunch you might want to try the Garden Frittata on page 26. It's a delicious pancake-style omelet. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of my favorite all time recipes, the Turkey Scaloppine Marsala on page 133. There are a lot of good recipes in this book.

Oops, I didn't realize I'd reviewed The Joslin Diabetes book before, so I had to delete it to post this one. This is what I said about it back in February:

Okay, so this is a book for people with diabetes, a condition that affects neither me nor hubby Dub, but Dub likes to eat and I like to cook and I'm a lover of all cookbooks that can take a novice, an apprentice or an experienced chef and assist her in turning out a delicious meal and this book excels in that.

As it says on the cover this book has 200 recipes for 1 to 4 people and according to Dr. Alan Jacobson the medical director of the Joslin Diabetes Center in his introduction, these are safe recipes for diabetics. That being said, they're mighty tasty recipes too. You don't have to be a diabetic to appreciate the meals you can whip up with this book acting as your guide.

Dub and I have had the Crustless Spinach Quiche on page 30 a number of times now. Even though Dub is fond of saying real men don't eat quiche, he tucks right into this. We also like the Chicken Breast Stuffed with Feta Cheese and Spinach on page 126 a whole bunch. We're Popeye lovers at hour house, we eat our spinach. And if you're looking for a delicious desert, and it's healthy or it wouldn't be in this book, try the Sauteed Banana with Creme Fraiche on page 224, you'll never look at bananas the same again.

This is a deliciously good cookbook which any chef should be proud to have in her house.

These five cookbooks all have one thing in common, they are full of good recipes. The fact that they are also diabetic cookbooks shouldn't put you off from getting them and trying out some of the recipes. You will find a lot of fine meals you can enjoy in these books

Great deal

Product was advertised as used, but looked brand new. Delivery was a bit slower than other things I've ordered, but beat the deadline by a couple of days.

A Little Too complicated
~ Written on Nov 10, 2008. 2 out of 2 users found this review helpful.

Recipes were not fast and simple like some other books, but some are interesting. Info was also presented in more detail than I was looking for. If you are "studying" diabetes to learn about it and not so much about the management of it, you will like this book. I was looking for fast info easy to prepare and get husbands diet into foods he likes.

Not Just For Diabetics
~ Written on Aug 5, 2008. 2 out of 2 users found this review helpful.

I purchased this book because I was going out with a fellow who had diabetes. Funny thing was about the time the book arrived I stopped seeing him. No sense letting a good cook book go to waste! What I discovered were delicious, easy to prepare meals that are healthy. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but my waistline seems to be shrinking just a bit.

If you have a friend or family member who is diabetic they will love these wonderful meals. But even if you are not diabetic, and you just want to eat healthy meals that are economical, with minimal prep time, and taste good, try this cookbook.
