EDITORIAL REVIEW

In April 1998, Debra Puglisi Sharp -- wife, nurse, and mother of teenage twins -- was tending the roses in her garden when a factory worker with a cocaine habit slipped in through an open door and waited for her to come in. Nino, her husband of twenty-five years, got in the way and was shot. The man then attacked and raped Debra, placed her in the trunk of his car, and drove away. Kept hog-tied in her abductor's house, Debra finally learned of her husband's murder from a newscast on a radio that the man blared to muffle her screams while he was out. After five excruciating days, Debra's mounting rage at her captor -- and the wrenching thought of her children burying their father alone -- gave her the courage and strength she desperately needed. She loosened her ties, groped her way to the phone...and dialed 911.

Shattered is an indelible portrait of hope, determination, and the agonizing journey back to life. Struggling to heal from her horrendous ordeal and the devastating loss of her husband, Debra also had to endure an agonizing court trial, the raw grief of her children, and her own crippling fear. But through her work in hospice care and as an advocate for victims of violence and trauma, she has slowly discovered the measure of her own strength. A compelling survival story -- tragic and ultimately heroic -- Shattered represents one woman's attempts to make sense of a senseless crime.

Tragedy overcome
~ Written on Nov 2, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

The author shows how a terrible tragedy can be overcome by strength of will and faith.

This could happen to anybody at any time and would shatter any family. This victim rebuilt her life in a remarkable way and is to be commended.

I would highly recommend this book to professionals working in the field of domestic violence, sexual assault and similar fields. It really gives you insight into what a victim goes through and Debbie Puglisi-Sharp talks a lot about the rights and wrongs of how her case was handled. Victims may also benefit from reading this book, if they have healed enough in their own life to be able to read the words and handle the trauma that Ms. Puglisi endured. It really makes you realize that sometimes things aren't all that bad when you consider what could happen - like in this particular case. A true testiment of a survivor's fight to live.

Powerful & Moving Must Read

Debra's story is one of nightmares, and yet she came through what can be considered the worst situation of a lifetime to become a survivor. This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys true crime books. More importantly, any survivor of crime can read this book and find the strength and courage of this woman jump off the page to help them in their time of need. A great woman and an unbelievable story of survival. I keep this book on the shelf at my victim services organization and have given it out to many crime victims as a resource.

Why do all of you people gloss over.....

the fact that this is another black animal attacking white people. Do you not feel hatred for this beast? I read about crap like this happening every day and i am sick of it, arent you people? When are you going to wake up and quit allowing the media to make these oh so common attacks seen like no big deal when if the perpetrator was white the WHOLE WORLD WOULD KNOW about it.

This country is sick and its because of all of the yellow bellied white people who are too cowardly to do anything about these animals.

Excuse me i need to go vomit.

Review for Shattered: Reclaiming a Life...
~ Written on Dec 28, 2007. out of users found this review helpful.

I have read mixed reviews for this book, so decided to read for myself to get an opinion. This was a well written book that seems to really get to the facts of what happened and portrays the very seriousness of this attack and the process of recovery. Debra Puglisi Sharp is an extremely strong woman who in writing this book will certainly help to aid in providing stength to others who have been through similar situations. Kudos to Debra for having the strength not only to survive this attack but to write her account of the attack and recovery to help others.
