Not Just a Boring Spelling list

I started using the Spelling Workout books from Modern Curriculum Press a couple years ago as a secular recommendation from The Well Trained Mind.
I have looked around at other spelling books and I like the structure of this series better. It is set up with a sport theme throughout. The lessons begin with a little story on a range of topics, which my son really likes, then you can give a warm up test to see what words your child will need to give more attention. Next there are a couple pages with fill in the blank exercises for practice (I find this much better for remembering the spelling words than just writing them over and over, which can become a mindless exercise). On the last page of the lesson there is a writing exercise, proofreading and extra practice. I really like that they have a proofreading section. You test the words at the end of the lesson and send the mistakes to the "word locker", where you review them later. Overall this is a great comprehensive spelling curriculum that teaches concepts along with memorization in an interesting format.

My son has been an avid reader but his spelling was not great. He has progressed a lot and is doing very well now with this series.

I have to use this book for spelling because that is what the teacher chose. I don't like it and find it very confusing. There are far better spelling books out there and I wouldn't waste my time on this one.

Solid spelling program and user-friendly

Excellent series and very user-friendly. Clearly states the spelling rule each week and has sufficient exercises to enable student to master spelling and meaning/usage of words. Proofreading skills/symbols are taught weekly, a writing assignment using the spelling words is included; Latin/Greek roots are taught in upper levels (good with classical education). Dictionary skills taught as well. Well rounded spelling program in an interesting package for students.

Spelling Workout, Grade 5

A typical spelling book with word lists, "match the word" exercises, puzzles and paragraph stories. Nothing really made it stand out from other spelling books. Great for secular homeschoolers or parents whose children need practice with spelling.
