Biology and the Living Environment
~ Written on Aug 4, 2008. out of users found this review helpful.

The book has a good coverage of the following areas:
o Unity and Diversity Among Living Things
o Maintenance of Living Things
o Human Physiology
o Reproduction, Development and Genetics
o Evolution
o Ecology and the Biosphere
o Review of Lab Skills
o Extensive Glossary

The book would be useful for students preparing for the
NYS Regents in Living Environment. A companion book
would be Let's Review Biology-4th Edition-Barron's Series

Sample diagrams in Chapter 1 of Concepts in Modern Biology
are as follows:
o Life processes (nutrition, transport, respiration etc.)
o Euglena
o Prokaryotes
o shapes of bacteria
o viral structures (DNA , protein coat, tail)
o Tracheophytes and their structures
o Dicots and Monocots
o planaria
o annelids
o mollusks
o arachnids
o echinoderms
o Orders of Mammalia

The book would be a good preparation for high school
students bound for college. The acquisition is priced
reasonably at $50 or so. Many used copies are available.

clean, straightforward, and easygoing
~ Written on Mar 25, 2001. 3 out of 3 users found this review helpful.

I used this textbook in a high-school biology course more than twenty years ago. Since that time, I have often wanted a simple, clear explanation of this biological process or that one, without foraying into overly complicated diagrams or extraneous biochemical details. Kraus's book satisfies that niche. While the explanations and pictures wouldn't win him a Ph.D., the book brims with handy, useful, and straightforward explanations. I can browse them and say, "Oh, yeah, I remember that." It's an easy read and it has just the information you want. It's delightful to see that I can still find useful in 2001 what I aced through in 1975!
