Best Corrections Book
~ Written on Mar 18, 2010. out of users found this review helpful.

If you are in the correctional field, this is the best book to have. It's the type of book that you would wan't to keep around and refresh yourself on throughout the years. This is the only civilian book that the Federal BOP uses to help train new hires in Basic training. A must have!!

Unique book

This is really a unique book. Long before psychologists started writing popular books about manipulation techniques, this book was written back in the day. It lays out for you how set-ups and prison escapes are done. It gives a good reality check to the gullible, whether involved in prison work or not.

I'm glad I purchased this book.

Great book!

I was new to working in a prison and in orientation they reccommended that we read this book. I got it from Amazon and started reading it right away. It gave such insight into the criminal's mind and gave me (especially as a beginner) a taste of what to look out for and what to avoid. I still read it every so often just to refresh my awareness. If you knwo someone that is new to corrections, this would be a teriffic gift.

Highly Suggested for Anyone in Criminal Justice Field
~ Written on Oct 28, 2009. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

I highly suggest this book for anyone working with criminals. Years ago, this book was in our family, but it passed so many hands, it's unknown who has it now and everyone wants it. It's a valuable book to any of us because eight family members work with criminals. I bought this book for my husband and he continues to thank me. I've read some over his shoulder and have been impressed with the clear writing style, the ample examples and explanations. I'm a high school English teacher and I feel this book is an excellent resource for anyone who works around people who play mind-games, including myself who works at a school that has a discipline program alongside an academic program. This book answers the eternal question of how a good boss can get walked off a unit. It gives ample examples of "games" criminals play to manipulate the personnel around them to their advantage, and gives the persons working around them a way to play the game, know the game, and protect themselves from losing the game. This book is so jam-packed with information that it's best to read a little at a time so that you can consider the information you've read - it's that intensive, and that eye-opening, and you'll want to finish every bit. It should be a textbook used in every academy course in any criminal field.

A Must Read

For those in corrections, read this book. If you have a family member incarcerated, read this book. If you are considering a career in corrections, read this book. If you are studying corrections in school, read this book. In the today's correctional environment, the manipulation of correctional staff has taken center stage for administrators and investigators. Contraband, cell phones being of special interest, are brought in by three distinct groups: inmates who work on the outside but come back at the end of the day, visitors, and staff. Inmate work squads are always suspect and are usually searched prior to reentering the institution. Visitors, such as inmates family and friends but also should include volunteers, are also a major source of contraband being smuggled in. Visitors are searched, but not to the same degree inmates are searched. Some visitors are willing accomplishes, but more often then not, they are family members coerced or manipulated into smuggling in contraband. Some staff members are also willing accomplishes but must are trapped in a manipulation scheme and don't know how to get out without losing their job. This book will help visitors and staff to identify and avoid manipulation schemes by inmates and suggest ways to end a manipulation scheme that has already begun.
