EDITORIAL REVIEW

Now in Paperback, with a new Index!

In this bold, momentous work, Joseph Ratzinger--in his first book written since he became Pope--seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent "popular" depictions and to restore Jesus' true identity as discovered in the Gospels. Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the Pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and invites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith.

From Jesus of Nazareth: "the great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: What did Jesus actually bring, if not world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought?

The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who formerly unveiled his countenance gradually first to Abraham, then to Moses and the Prophets, and then in the Wisdom Literature--the God who revealed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth.

He has brought God, and now we know his face, now we can call upon him. Now we know the path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the truth about where we are going and where we come from: faith, hope, and love."

Unintelligable to the average reader

Based upon the style and the vocabulary used in the book it is best suited for people with a background in theology or biblical studies. The book is unintelligible to the average reader. Further the book is described as "my personal search 'for the face of the Lord'". I found nothing "personal" in the book at all. To me if a book is supposed to be about a "personal search" it should be written in first person and it was not.

Respect for Benedict XVI...

I abandoned Catholicism roughly 30 years ago and idly entertained an agnosticism that lasted well into adulthood. A protestant faithful now, I don't believe the pope infallible, but I welcome knowledge wherever proffered by those due a layman's respect. Accordingly, I found Pope Benedict XVI's Jesus of Nazareth an affirmational experience.

I assumed a discourse on the historicity of Jesus. It is present, though hardly pronounced. More so, the pope mixes hermeneutics, ecclesiology, and comparative exegesis to present the fully realized Christ. Jesus of Nazareth alternately captivated me, confounded me, bored me, and caught me up again. Yet, any fault lies not with Pope Benedict's writing, but with my laical limitations.

Pleasantly ecumenical and a privilege to read, this first volume brings us from the Baptism of Jesus through the Transfiguration. It is a challenging trek. I eagerly await the second volume and the pope's Passion meditation within it. 4+ stars.

This was a really good book. I don't give 5 stars but this one comes close. When I received this book I thought another one to go on my book shelf but the book grabbed my attention right off and gave me some new insight to Christ and the Christian faith.
