Helpful CD's
~ Written on Nov 18, 2007. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

I really like these CD's for listening to in the car, although I find the music distracting. It only plays at the beginning and end of each segment, but it's sometimes difficult to hear the words clearly during the music portions. On the other hand, if I'm zoning out after listening for a while, the music brings my attention back to the CD, so there are trade-offs. The CD's come with small books with the list of words covered on each CD, so you can look up something if you're not sure you heard it correctly. Although each word is only said once, after listening to the CD's for a while, you learn the words, slowly but surely. I had the tapes, before they came out in CD's and learned a lot of vocabulary from them. Now with the CD's containing 3 levels, my vocabulary should really increase. I find just hearing words much easier to do while I'm driving than whole phrases or lessons. And the expressions CD's help with hearing the rhythm of the language, which is a really important part of comprehension. At the moment, these are my favorite Spanish CD's and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to increase their listening and speaking vocabulary.

Really great - and it works!

I have tried countless methods for learning Spanish, and this has been the most effective so far. The CDs address nouns, adjective, adverbs, verbs, and phrases. The books that come with the CDs are very helpful so you can see the spelling, which helps you associate many Spanish words with their English counterparts. Listening to the pronounciation is very helpful and repeating the words out loud helps reinforce them in your memory. I highly recommend this.

Tip: I ripped the tracks to MP3s so I could put them on my MP3 player. I went a step further and broke up the tracks into 5-minute segments so I could put a track on repeat. The only way to learn is through repetition and this makes it very convenient to repeat the same track. I listen to/from work which is 20-minutes each way. My vocabulary has increased tremendously and because of the variety of words, you can learn to create sentences.

Neither effective nor interesting

I find that I learn much better when I'm introduced to new vocabulary in the context of a story or dialog. I was hoping that this CD would have songs or rhymes that would help me remember new words better, but it's just a random list of words read in Spanish and English with music in the background. I was quite disappointed, and would have given it zero stars, but 1 is the lowest. If you learn can subliminally, maybe you can pick up Spanish by listening to this over and over, but I got bored with this very quickly and found it irritating after the first 20 minutes.

Easy way to learn Spanish vocabulary

I always listen to these CD's while driving to work and all other trips I make. This is an easy way to increase your knowledge of Spanish vocabulary with very little effort. The background music is pleasant and the variety of vocabulary is interesting. Listening to the words spoken correctly is lots better than trying to figure it out yourself with a book.

Not for listening to while doing ANYTHING else

Some audio foreign language products are OK to listen to as you do other things - the main one we try to combine, I think, is driving. Don't try that with this one; you will be wasting your time, and, perhaps, dangerously distracting yourself.

I found this product very useful to work with as a concentrated activity: sitting with the CD headphones on and the booklet in hand, reading as I listened and repeated. I picked up some new words each time I did this, but I could only listen to one track at a time (each is about 20 minutes long) and I agree with the reviewer who said the tracks are too long and should have been broken up.

Unfortunately repitition is indeed the key to vocabulary learning: listening, speaking, reading, and then more of the same. Since this product only speaks each word once, in Spanish and English or in English and Spanish, then instantly moves on to another word, you are going to have to do much of the repetition on your own. The booklets help with this, but you will still have to structure your own approach to repeating.

Do not try to do this in your car! Your job in your car is to drive, and this disc is so concentrated that the danger is you'll concentrate on it instead of the road.

An adjunct to learning vocabulary, not the key. But it does have a lot of words, all pronounced pretty clearly, and that is a certain help in itself.
