EDITORIAL REVIEW

Bringing together a stellar array of self-regulation researchers, this comprehensive and authoritative handbook addresses the breadth of current theories, findings, and practical applications in the field. Examined are the conscious and nonconscious processes by which people regulate their thoughts, emotions, attention, impulses or appetites, and task performances; the developmental trajectories of these capacities; and implications for personal relationships, addictions, consumption, and mental health. The ways individuals differ in their basic abilities and styles of self-control are considered, as are strategies for enhancing functioning in this area. Offering cutting-edge coverage of a key dimension of human experience, the Handbook also identifies important questions for future investigation.

An indespensible reference
~ Written on Sep 16, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

Baumeister & Vohns have brought together almost all of the productive scholars concerned with self-regulation and self-control and given them an opportunity to address the specific areas in which their theories apply. It is an excellent volume.

The Most Important Issue in Mental Health Today
~ Written on Sep 10, 2006. 15 out of 15 users found this review helpful.

Self-Regulation is the single most important issue in mental health today. The Handbook of Self-Regulation- Research, Theory and Applications edited by Roy F. Baumeister and Kathleen D. Vohs is a must read for mental health professionals. The volume is very technical. However, the topic of Self Regulation is so important that professionals need to become technically literate in the field. Nearly every well known researcher in the field has a chapter in this book. Chapters cover the neuroscience and psychology of Self Regulation. Disorders of Self Regulation are also addressed. There are separate chapters for addiction, alcoholism, eating disorders, compulsive shopping, sex and criminal behavior. This book is one to be kept for many years as a reference.
