Describing different distances

Can someone give me a list of phrases that describe different far distances?

1) a short distance from you: I heard someone cry at a distance?

2) a medium distance from you: I see a crowd far away?

3) a long distance from you: he saw a light in the distance?


Well, we have different phrases to describe different far distances. But I just don't know how to classify them. Anyone can lend a hand?

3) a long distance from you: he saw a light in the distance? :tick: (I don't detect any significant difference between 'in the distance' and 'at a distance' - apart, of course from the one I've exploited (the fact that you can attenuate it by the addition of 'not very'. But a similar attenuation is possible with 'at a distance' - using an adjective: 'at a reasonable distance'
