Describing different distances
Can someone give me a list of phrases that describe different far distances?
1) a short distance from you: I heard someone cry at a distance?
2) a medium distance from you: I see a crowd far away?
3) a long distance from you: he saw a light in the distance?
Well, we have different phrases to describe different far distances. But I just don't know how to classify them. Anyone can lend a hand?

(I don't detect any significant difference between 'in the distance' and 'at a distance' - apart, of course from the one I've exploited (the fact that you can attenuate it by the addition of 'not very'. But a similar attenuation is possible with 'at a distance' - using an adjective: 'at a reasonable distance'

I - like many other potential contributors - have only just seen this. Possible effects of your posting again are
- removing your question from the 'Unanswered Posts' list.
- Persuading people not to answer, in the face of such impatience.
