Default Hebrews

(KJV) Hebrews 4:12 -
(For) the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart.

(MOV*) Hebrews 4:12 -
The word of God is swift and powerful in penetrating the soul and spirit better than any sharp two-edged sword can in seperating the joints and the marrow. It knows what a man thinks of and feels.

please check!

That version is from King James. Here's another version--it might help you with your interpretation:

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

There are more versions here: NETBible: Hebrews 4:12

By the way,
  • the word of God means the Truth;e.g., the truth is sharper than ...
  • the sword is a symbol or power and authority
  • according to one author,
"By the definitions provided, the Sword of the Spirit, is the weapon of power and authority, sharper than any double edged sword, used to wound and kill our spiritual (unseen) enemies, in a nonmaterial war (Spiritual War)." Read more here: THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT

(MOV*) Hebrews 4:12 -
The word of God is swift and powerful. It pierces the soul and spirit better than any sharp two-edged sword can separate the joints from the marrow. It is skilled at judging a man's thoughts and feelings.

So why do you prefer to use "pierces" over "penetrate" in which the latter is the one I used in my own version? Is it something about the usage of the word?

Rhythm, style, sound - it's a personal preference. It has a sharper sound and a more emotive image.

OK! I used penetrate to add it to my vocabulary, that's all. I been reading the word but isn't using it so frequent. I agree with you that "pierce" truly has a better sound in this sentence. thanks!
