A Word from "War and Peace"

Dear Teacher,

I have looked up the following word, written bold, in all dictionaries but could not find any explanation. Would you please help me?

"...Rostov, who had just celebrated his promotion to a cornetcy..."

Hello Honore!

The word 'cornetcy' is no longer used, but means the lowest rank of commissioned cavary officer in the British Army.
