Vol. 1. From the Beginnings to the Cycles of Romance. The Cambridge History of English and American Literature: An Encyclopedia in Eighteen Volumes. 1907–21

About.com: http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/firsteuro/lang.html

Two more sites for you to try. It is not clear if you are interested in language only, or in culture generally.

On the front of every Latin book I used, I wrote (I stole the poem from somewhere):

Latin is a language,
as dead as can be,
it killed all the Romans,
and now it's killing me!

I am glad I studied Latin.
