A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares two nouns based on similarity or resemblance. For example, when a child looks at the sky and sees a star but does not know the word "star," he might say, "Mommy, look at the lamp in the sky!"

The child is comparing a 'lamp' to a 'star' based upon the similarity between two things that shine.

Other examples: We use the phrase "a blanket of snow" to describe a snowfall that covers the ground evenly, as if the snow were a fabric.

The popular software "Windows" is named for the rectangular units that show information in much the same way as the windows on our houses allow us to look outside in different directions and see different things.

That's right, but a metaphor doesn't have to involve nouns.
Verb: "shuffle off this mortal coil" = die. Both "shuffle off" and "mortal coil" are metaphors. There are many extended metaphors that involve other parts of speech as well.
Adjective: "The elefantine man" = the fat man.
I'm sure others could come up with metaphorical adverbs, etc.

Yes exactly. And we have no idea who's pulling our strings, or why. Some people think that a part has already been written for us that must be played out.
