metaphor
noun [C or U]
an expression which describes a person or object in a literary way by referring to something that is considered to possess similar characteristics to the person or object you are trying to describe:
'
The mind is an ocean' and 'the city is a jungle' are both metaphors.
Metaphor and simile are the most commonly used figures of speech in everyday language.

That's right, but a metaphor doesn't have to involve nouns.
Verb: "shuffle off this mortal coil" = die. Both "shuffle off" and "mortal coil" are metaphors. There are many extended metaphors that involve other parts of speech as well.
Adjective: "The elefantine man" = the fat man.
I'm sure others could come up with metaphorical adverbs, etc.

Yes exactly. And we have no idea who's pulling our strings, or why. Some people think that a part has already been written for us that must be played out.

Yes, they're all similes.
