I'm looking for a word that comprises pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks, etc., a word similar to how household appliances comprises fridges, cookers, toasters, etc.

Does "I need to buy some stationery. The first day of school is in a week" make sense?

Yes, although I'd probably say "It's only a week until the first day of school" or "The first day of school is only a week away". Your version is not ungrammatical, though.

Do you mean it's not very likely to be heard? I took it straight from Interchange 1 published by Cambridge University Press, page 71.

I think it is more common to say something happens in a week, for example:

School starts in a week.
The children go back to school in a week.

I think this is like a round-about way of saying it:

The first day of school is in a week.
