Dolch Basic Words
The Dolch words are the 220 most frequently found words in books that children read. The lists are in order of frequency. These lists are studied in first and second grade; children who learn these words have a good base for beginning reading. Many of these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding rules. These words must be learned as sight words.
Every Child A Reader
Every Child A Reader is a unique collaboration between charitable trusts, the business sector and government. It aims to show that, with the right resources, it is possible to overcome the literacy difficulties that blight so many children's lives.
The initiative is funding highly-skilled Reading Recovery teachers in inner-city schools, to provide intensive help to children most in need. It forms part of the government's London Challenge, a partnership between all who seek more for London's young people.
The immediate aim is to reach 5,000 children, particularly those living in areas of high social deprivation. Longer term, the initiative aims to secure sustainable investment in early literacy intervention, and to explore how intensive support in reading can be provided most cost effectively in a national context.
