Why do you not want to use "to braid"? It's the correct term.

Ah. OK, if you're giving instructions to someone, then you might say "Please do/make two braids, one on the left and one on the right", or "I want her hair in two braids".

In the UK, we usually use the word "plait" (pronounced "platt") for both the verb and the noun. It does make for a somewhat messy sentence, but I have heard, for example "She plaited her hair in two plaits". By the same token, I'm assuming you can also say "She braided her hair in two braids" but I admit that repeating the word plait/braid isn't ideal.

If you simply said "Braid her hair", then I would expect the outcome to be one braid/plait, falling down the middle of the neck, using all the hair.

I'd never really thought about it before!
