[Idiom] Are there any idioms in English to say 'finish or end something' ?

Hi everyone,

I was writing an essay yesterday, when I realized that I can't replace the 'something was completed' statement with an idiom. In my native language, there is one for that, which mostly means 'put a dot above the letter i'. I thought it also exists in English, but turned out it doesn't. However, I found this: 'to make a point'. As I read the description, I think it more likely means have an agreement or solve a problem.

Do you know any idioms I could use? Or it is better to use the least possible sayings in an essay?

There is a common saying in English: dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s. It means to ensure that something is fully and thoroughly completed. It is perhaps not an idiom strictly speaking because even if you've never heard it before you can guess its meaning.

I wouldn't use a lot of idioms and sayings in an academic essay.
