[Grammar] ‘account for’ VS ‘make up’

There are two sentences from a good dictionary:
‘Electronic goods account for over 30% of our exports.’
‘Women make up 40 percent of the workforce.’
To my understanding, ‘account for’ and ‘make up’ are interchangeable, but which one is used more frequently in modern English?

They are playing a similar role here but there are various differences between them. It doesn't help much to contrast their relative frequencies.
