She sings well and is training to be a singer.

Is there anything wrong with “and is”. It sounds funny to me.
 
There is nothing wrong with it. The sentence is grammatically correct. In this context, the second "she" can be omitted.
 
You'll want to include it if you want to emphasize the second part, thus:

She sings well, AND she is training to become a singer.
