    I appreciate that

    Dear Friends,

In a TV show a guy thanked and added: "I appreciate that." So, he said:

    "Thank you. I appreciate that."

What does 'I appreciate that' mean here? As I know, it means something like 'I have a high opinion about something' but in such thanking contexts it sounds odd to me.

    Thank you.

    It depends on the context.
Usually it express a thankfull feeling. For instance if you help someone, he or she may reply: "Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help."

Yes, but in this context the guy was singing (it was an audition, actually). When he finished, one of the judges said: "It was great." The guy: "Thank you. I appreciate that." You appreciate help but do you appreciate kind remarks too?

In the context you provided, probably the guy wants to emphasize his thanks.
He appreciates something done to him, or related to him, he is grateful.
It is used in a formal context.

    See another example:

"I think this computer is experiencing some trouble, I can't connect to the Internet. What do you think could be the problem?"
"If you wish we could send someone to your place right now to fix it, Sir."
"Oh, I would really appreciate that. Thank you."

Yes, it is a usual way to thank someone.
    He appreciates the compliment
    .
It is kind of an automatic answer. Probably the guy was nervous and did not think precisely in what to say. If he had some time to prepare a thanking speech he would say something more elaborate. But his automatic answer is correct.
