This is not so much a funny answer as a joke but....

The Americans spent millions of dollars developing a special pen that could be used in space. It had to work upright, upside down, in zero gravity and be able to withstand pressure, heat, cold etc etc. After millions of dollars and ten years of research, they finally created the Space Pen and proudly announced it to the world as an amazing invention that solved the problems of how to write in space.
The Russians pointed out that they had been writing in space for years - they used a pencil.
