In what context does the pronunciation change for the below given word.

Word: Contrary.

Pronunciation 1 - kon-trer-ee
Pronunciation 2 - kuhn-trair-ee

I guess you took it from here. They say the latter pronunciation is an alternative pronunciation for meaning 5.

Your link directs me to this thread. I think you have misplaced the link that you intended to.

I have learnt the "Pronunciation 1 - kon-trer-ee." I was watching this movie "Law of attraction" the other day, where the actresses pronounces it the "Pronunciation 2 - kuhn-trair-ee."

Any help is much appreciated.

it is fine and dandy to know various pronunciations of a word. Once you acquire the ability to predict stress and to pronounce it, it is not worth pondering about the questions you have raised. Instead, focus on suprasegmentals, which 99.9 percent of books dont discuss much: it is one thing to say that there are various intonational patterns, but another thing to perceive and produce such patterns. Here, you need help from voice trainers: this field is dissociated from standard accent reduction books like Ann Cook's.
 
Perhaps CONtrary is the noun, and conTRARy is the adjective, to many people.
