1)"For him to pass an exam we bought a lot of books."

OR
I would say "We bought him a lot of books so he could pass an exam."

Do you often say 1)? Probably we use it when writing a composition or an article?

Why would anyone write something like "To pass an exam he worked hard."? Shouldn't it be "He was working hard to pass an exam."?
