One of the students in my class used this word when describing one of the characters of a story he himself had written in English (unfortunately I don't remember the details, he must have looked up this word in a dictionary). Can "bad fairy" be applied to a man? Could you give some context where it might be used?

In folk history fairies can indeed be male or female. You need to search "fairy" or "faerie" on google, when you have discovered what a fairy is, you should be able to understand a context in which one might be referred to.
