"take a road" is used in this sentence.
"I took a road that went along a narrow vally,and then up onto the moor again.

Yes, it's just a way of saying, "I drove along a road", "I chose a road".
'Take' has many uses meaning "choose and use":
"Take the first turn on the left", "Take a seat", "Take your partners for a dance", "Take a number, divide it by two ..."
