'since' followed by the past perfect

Is it possible to use 'since' with past perfect?

e.g. I hadn't talked with him since I had gone to Madrid.

Yes - although 'been in' would sound better in many cases.

But what's the difference ? I know that usually since is followed by the past simple therefore what's the difference if I use it with past simple or past perfect?

e.g. I hadn't talked with him since I had been in Madrid.
I hadn't talked with him since I was in Madrid.
