The translation goes "she extended(stretched) her hand upward", but I think "reach up" can mean "stand up".
Does "reach up" mean "stretch your hand" or "stand up"? If it means "stretch your hand upward", the mom should be much taller than she.

ex)When my daughter was three years old, I took her ice skating for the first time, even though I hadn't been on the ice for almost twenty years. I laced up her tiny white skates, my fingers performing the act as if I did it everyday, and then we hobbled to the rink. She reached up, grabbed my hand, and stood upright, and we glided into the cold...

It certainly means to stretch your hand up - of course you might also stand up, to increase your reach, but you can reach up or out from a sitting position too - and given that the girl is only three, the mother will indeed be much taller.

Look at this picture: Redirect Notice

That little girl is definitely having to "reach up" to hold hands with her mother.

Thanks a million for your endeavor even to find a picture!!!
