Places I've hiked don't have much in the way of cell reception. I'm not sure how much good they'll do.

What does the phrase in the way of mean in this context?

Places I've hiked don't have much cell reception.

Does this sentence mean the same thing?(i.e. There won't be much (cell phone)signals in the way you go)

Thank you raymott. I didn't know that it was an idiom. Then, does my suggestion almost mean(by leaving out things in bracket) the same?
Yes, it means pretty much the same thing.
