What do you mean by "letting his guard down."? The dictionary definition is "to be uncareful", but I don't understand why it is used here.

ex)In October 2011, Jeff Ragsdale, a stand-up comedian and actor from New York, found himself unable to cope with devastating loneliness. Having just broken up with his girlfriend, he stood at the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world, feeling completely isolated.“New York City, believe it or not, can be a difficult place to meet people,” Jeff recalled during an interview with BBC. Desperate for human connection, he put up a flyer with a simple message: Call me. “If anyone wants to talk about anything, call me,” Jeff wrote, along with his phone number. He signed it “Jeff, one lonely guy.” He said posting a flyer was not an easy decision and he was completely letting his guard down.
“I’m basically posting a flyer that says I’m a loser,” he said during an appearance on CBS. “But I just need to talk to people.

He was lowering his defenses, opening himself up to ridicule or abuse.
