I know it's ok to say

a lesser amount of money

Is it also ok and is it stricktly in agreement with the grammar rules to use less instead?

a lesser amount of money = a less amount of money (or is it ok only in casual speech?)

It's not OK in formal, informal or casual speech. It just doesn't work. You can say "a smaller/lower amount of money". Please note that "OK" should always be capitalised.
