[Grammar] It appears to be I/me?

I came across this question:
"It appears to be___."
The answer given is "I".
We are so used to, however, saying "It appears to be me."

Is this some grammar similar to "It was I", "It was he" etc?

How to explain it?

Appear can be a copula/linking verb, but it's a poor question to me. The majority of native speakers would say me.

Whether it's spoken or written, most native speakers (for the third time) would use 'me'.
