1. Half of the population is left handed.

2. Half of the population are left handed.

3. Half of the population is students.

4. Half of the population are students.


3 is wrong and 4 is grammatical. Then how about 1 and 2?

Which is grammatical between 1 and 2?

They are both grammatical, and both fine.
