[Grammar] above-metioned vs above mentioned

Is there any difference (save for the way it's written) between "above mentioned" and "above-mentioned" in the following statement? I think I read somewhere that it may be a formal vs. informal thing, or AmE vs. BrE way of writing it.

It's a question of how traditional and helpful one wants to be regarding punctuation. Combinations of words like this (with a past participle) being used as adjectives should be hyphenated, to help the user understand that "above" modifies "mentioned" and not "technologies."
