A nick name or stage name "Encyclopedia" seems to refer to someone who has the knowledge like an Encyclopedia. Doesn't it? In Korea, when someone is very smart, we sometimes says he is like a walking dictionary.
3)Leroy Brown, also known as Encyclopedia Brown, is a boy detective.
In this story, he helps his father, Chief of Idaville Police, solve the case of the stolen diamond necklace. Encyclopedia was reading about diamonds when his father, Chief Brown, entered his room.

In this context, I agree.

I loved those books when I was a kid! He was very brainy (smart) and knew a lot. Like a walking encyclopedia.

In this story, the jeweler, Mr.Goldman stole the diamond necklace, but I had a doubt that if he bought it, it was his. Why did he have to steal it? Is it only because of the insurance money?

If it had been glass, it would have broken on the stone floor, but the glass copy on Mr. Goldman’s desk wasn’t broken. So the necklace on his desk had to be the real diamond necklace. If Encyclopedia had not solved the case, Mr. Goldman would have kept the diamond necklace and collected the five million dollars’ insurance money, too!

Yes, it is insurance fraud. He had a fake glass necklace stolen so he could have both the original real diamond necklace and the insurance money for the "stolen" necklace.
