    Bullet points in table

    Hi,

I am editing a document that has tables with bullet points. I feel its awkward to have bullet points within a table. Is that right? Please let me know.

    Thanks and regards,
    Sharon

No, it's not necessarily awkward. If the table is appropriate, and the bullets in each cell are appropriate, then you can use both.

    It all depends on context.

"I feel it's awkward to have bullet points within a table"

Nobody seems to have noticed, so I decided to point out this little mistake or typo.

    Re: Bullet points in table

If God didn't want bullet points to exist within a table, Bill Gates would have grayed out the bullet shortcut whenever you were in a table.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I'm not sure I want to be in a table, with or without Bill Gates.

    Re: Bullet points in table

    Hi,

Formally speaking, I mean according to English Grammar,
are bullet points considered punctuation marks?

I make that question taking regard to this definition: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/d...q=bullet+point

If not, wouldn't numbers before dots or letters before closing brackets be more appropriate in a formal text? (an academic paper, for instance)

    Re: Bullet points in table

The use of bullets is entirely one of style. There are no grammar "rules" that apply.

The University of Oxford Style Guide classifies them as punctuation: Punctuation - University of Oxford
They appear to meet the standard definition: Punctuation - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary
punctuation - Dictionary definition and pronunciation - Yahoo! Education

I haven't honestly seen much discussion on the subject, though.
