Can "relative clause" be replaced with "dash", or vice versa?

People may also distort their pasts because of a social desirability bias - a tendency to present oneself in a socially desirable light.

Thank you.

I've seen it often in specialized/technical texts and research papers.

Yes, it should be. So can I use a hyphen instead of "relative clause" to bring out additional information?

A dash is more abrupt and is meant for those clauses that really interrupt the flow of the sentence.
