"He lit up a match to check if the tank had gas in it. Darwinism ensued."

According to Darwin's theory of natural selection, only the strong and fit survive. [STRIKE]qualified ones win and stupid ones loses .[/STRIKE]
So if I got it right, the above seems to be implying that [STRIKE]true, as a slang[/STRIKE] "Darwinism" weeds out stupidity. [STRIKE]identify stupidity?[/STRIKE]

Yes, your understanding of that text is correct.

What happened after he lit the match? Explosion?

I don't think that is a good illustration of Darwin's theory of evolution.

Think about it for a second.

(It's supposed to be black humor.)

Darwin theorized about "survival of the fittest." Those who die because of stupidity don't pass on their genes. Darwin in action.

This is actually more of a pop culture reference than being actually about evolution. As other posts (#5 -#6) have explained, while it is loosely tied to Darwin's Theory of evolution, the notion of "Darwinism" has kind of morphed into slang (or maybe it's more of a metaphor) for people doing stupidly dangerous stuff.

The original Darwin Awards required the recipient to die, but again the notion has kind of changed to where it can refer to potentially fatal actions that weren't well thought out. Sometimes you'll hear the people in question referred to as "Darwin Candidates".

This reminds me of something I saw on Tru TV once. Three guys were base jumping. (They were jumping off a cliff using a type of parachute.) The problem was the wind was blowing the wrong way. The first two guys jumped (one after the other) and got slammed into the cliff face and wound up on a ledge. Did the third guy say "Never mind" and opt out? No way! He jumped too with the same result. Definitely a candidate for an Honorable Mention (at least).
;-) :-D

Sounds like the definition for insanity - doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Actually first I have heared it on a video about Fyre festival, one of the person on video used this word like that ; " that is Darwinism at it's finest.
Can I use it in this way ; Emre found a mushroom in the forest and tried to eat it if it was harmless or not. Gosh... He proved Darwinism....

Stupid is as stupid does.
