Now I know the use of ‘sitting’ in #1 is redundant.

I'd like to make sure if it’s correct to use it in the context in #1. In other words, is it OK to replace the verb ‘traveling’ with ‘sitting’ in that context?

The verb sitting is perfectly correct and appropriate in your sentence, even if it is redundant. You don't need to replace it with a different verb.
